Sarah’s Art

My art practice grew from a love of making things by hand and a curiosity about what happens when different materials and techniques meet. I’m especially drawn to the landscapes and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest, from mountains and waterways to ravens, herons, jellyfish, salmon, and the wonderfully strange creatures of the sea.

Much of my recent work begins with block printing. I carve an image by hand, then explore where it might go next. Sometimes it becomes a traditional print. Other times the carved block itself becomes part of the finished artwork, incorporating live-edge wood, mosaic, grout, color, and texture.

I like leaving room for experimentation. Not every piece begins with a fully formed plan, and that is part of the process. I’m interested in finding the point where the character of the materials, the imperfections of handmade work, and the original idea begin to work together.
